A Locus of Thought
Moesgård, Aarhus, 2021
Inspired by Martin Heidegger and his retreat into the Black Forest, the proposal aspires to offer an alternative ambition for a retreat. Considered to be part of the existing Aarhus University Moesgård Campus, the new institutional building intends to offer a stimulating and inspiring retreat for intellects, innovators and creators to visit or stay for shorter or longer periods.
The spatial organisation of the retreat has been inspired by Henry Thoreau’s tripartite chair analogy. In his novel
“Walden: Life in the Woods”, Thoreau mentions having “three chairs” in his house; “one for solitude, two for company, three for society”.
The proposal is divided into three distinct blocks that each intends to create a tangible programmatic and spatial characteristic to align to one of these three words; solitude company and society. The building is understood as an eclectic, charged space, with a wide inventory of stimulating and inspiring interior spaces, broken only by two enclosed courtyard gardens, that allow for pockets of calmness and tranquillity.
